Lucretia Stoica Endowment Fund ESTABLISHED TO EXPAND THE JOB READINESS AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING SERVICES OF ISC

Established in May 2011 in recognition of the induction of Lucretia Stoica, former Executive Director of the International Services Center (formerly Nationalities Services Center) into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame on May 11, 2011.

The purpose of the Lucretia Stoica Endowment Fund is to provide resources to expand the job readiness / vocational training services of the agency. Many refugees come to the United States with job skills, however, their skills are not at the competitive level of American productivity.

Even though a refugee may initially secure a job with the assistance of the agency, she/he may fall behind in keeping up the necessary speed of production. A good example is sewing jobs. We have refugees with sewing skills, however, they used older, sometimes obsolete equipment, in their home countries. At the workplace they cannot keep pace with other workers using modern technology and lose their jobs. With training provided by the ISC using current equipment, refugees can become more competitive.

Lucretia Stoica served the Nationalities Services Center for more than 4 decades (42 years); she was Executive Director for 27 years. The agency was founded in 1916 as the International Institute of the Y.M.C.A. and became the Americanization Bureau. The name changed to the Nationalities Services Center in 1953 and again changed to the International Services Center in 1994 to reflect the wide diversity of people from around the world who were being served by the agency.

The names of Lucretia Stoica and the Nationalities Services Center have been synonymous with service to immigrants and refugees. She was engaged in a full spectrum of community activities and provided an important bridge of understanding between the “American” community and the “nationality” communities part of northeast Ohio. Under her leadership the agency accepted responsibilities for refugee resettlement from the Federal Government. It is part of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI).

All contributions to The Lucretia Stoica Endowment Fund are tax deductible. Please make your check payable to: The International Services Center for the Lucretia Stoica Endowment Fund.
Your donation will help fill the gap between what the U.S. Government provides for refugees and what is actually needed to assist them in their transition to a new home country and new culture.
